Initial Reaction:

Johan Santana matched up against Atlanta Braves youngster Kris Medlen in game two of the two-game set. It was a nailbiter all night between the two pitchers, but the bullpen would decide the game’s fate.

I’m putting all the blame on Jose Reyes and David Wright tonight. They are the faces of the franchise, whether they like it or not. They combined to go 0 for 8 with four strikeouts. For this team to be competitive, these guys have to step up!

Positives From The Game:

Homerun Buddies: Ike Davis and Jeff Francoeur hit their 4th and 5th homeruns respectively. They were the bright spots of the game. Looks like Manuel got something right by benching Francoeur for two days.

Luis Castillo: He gave the Mets a huge opportunity to take the lead in the 9th by reaching second base with no one out. He was 2-4 on the night.

Negatives From The Game:

David Wright: He used to be my favorite player, but not anymore. Wright struck out three times again tonight in an 0-4 performance. He also botched a ground ball play that let in the game winning run. I think he’s deserving of a day of tomorrow in Washington.

The Skipper: Jerry Manuel made a questioning bullpen decision. Was he right to put the rookie Jenrry Mejia into a very close meaningful game? He also replaced Chris Carter with Gary Matthews, Jr. in the 9th inning with Luis Castillo on second base, no one out. Why not let “the Animal” hit? Huh, Jerry?

Interesting Facts:

55: The number of strikeouts David Wright has thus far. He’s on pace for 223 strikeouts this season.

10: Losses out of a total of 21 the Mets have come up short by only one run.

5: Number of wins Billy Wagner recorded as a Met. He got credited with the win tonight as a Brave.

What’s Next?: The New York Mets open a two-game series against the Washington Nationals Wednesday night at Nationals Park. Game Time 7:05 PM.
