Initial Reaction:

It was just one of those days. Sabathia matched up against Justin Verlander in a game many fans were anticipating. Verlander was awesome for the Tigers. He went 6 2/3 innings, giving up only four hits and striking out four. The Tiger bullpen, which has been very good all series, did not allow a hit after Verlander left.

I wrote this yesterday, but again, the Yankees forgot their bats at the team hotel.

Positives From The Game:

Posada Punishes One: Offensively, this was the only positive from the game. Jorge went 2 for 4 and laced a sharp double to center field. However, Juan Miranda and Randy Winn left him hanging at second base.

Super Nova: Rookie pitcher, Ivan Nova, made his major league debut today in relief of Sabathia. Nova went two strong innings, yielding only two hits and striking out Adam Everett for his first career major league out.

Negatives From The Game:

CC Sabathia: The big man does not end up too often in this portion of the column. Sabathia started having issues with his pitch location in the 4th inning. Miguel Cabrera and Brennan Boesch hit back-to-back home runs. Sabathia left a fastball over the middle for Cabrera and hung a curve ball for Boesch. Cabrera touched up Sabathia again in the 6th inning with a two-RBI double.

Derek Jeter’s Arm: Jeter was hit in the elbow/fore arm by a 5th inning Justin Verlander 98 MPH fastball. Luckily Jeter was wearing a protective pad over his elbow. He stayed in the game and finished the day by going 1 for 4. Jeter will be happy to head home after going 3 for 29 on this seven-game road trip.

Interesting Facts:

7 for 14: Tigers rookie outfielder, Brennan Boesch went 7 for 14 against the Yanks in this four game set. The YES broadcast team picked up on the fact that Boesch’s swing looks eerie-similar to Twins’ first baseman, Justin Morneau. Hopefully, Morneau doesn’t hurt the Yanks as much as Boesch did this weekend.

11: Sabathia has allowed eleven home runs in Commerica Park. This is the 2nd most all-time. He trails Brad Radke and Paul Byrd by one home run for this notorious honor.

19: Miguel Cabrera has a 19-game hit streak against the Yankees. He is batting .376 on the season and is arguably one of the five best hitters in the American League. Maybe even Top 3.

2: This was only the second series that the Yankees had lost this year. The only other series loss came in Anaheim.

Home Sweet Home: The Yankees will return to Yankee Stadium for seven straight home games. However, the home stand will not be easy as the Yankees face the Twins(3 games), Red Sox(2), and Rays(2). The Yankees are 10-2 at home this year.

What’s Next?:

Time to head home to Yankee Stadium and open up with three games against the Twinkies. The Yankees went 10-0 against the Twins last season….Bring on Mauer and Morneau!
