Initial Reaction:

Mike Pelfrey was up against Craig Stammen this afternoon at a chilly and moist Citi Field. Pelfrey was okay today. He threw a season high 119 pitches as he went 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks. He also struck out six, to tie his season high.

The Nationals jumped ahead in the 2nd inning on a two run single by the pitcher, Stammen. Pelfrey answered back in the bottom half of the inning, helping his own cause with an RBI single. Francisco Rodriguez gave up a two-run homer to Roger Bernadina (2nd of the day and career) in the top of the 9th to propel the Nationals to a series win over the Mets.

The Positives:

Alex Cora: Filling in forĀ  Luis Castillo, Cora was 2-4 on the day with an RBI and run scored.

Angel Pagan: Pagan continue to hit the ball, going 2-4 with an RBI sac fly in the 3rd inning. One has to wonder if Beltran is going to be out long term, is Pagan’s bat better suited in the middle of the lineup while putting Reyes back at the top of the order.

The Negatives:

K-Rod: He allowed two hits in the top of the 9th, including the game winning home run. It was his first loss of the season.

Jeff Francoeur: Frenchie was 0-4 this afternoon, and his average has dropped to .235. I wouldn’t be surprised if Carter gets a day in right field this weekend at Florida.

Interesting Facts:

0-6: Mets’ record in rubber games this season.

8: The length of the road trip the Mets are headed on that will feature all division opponents.

What’s Next:

The Mets head to Florida to start a four-game weekend series with the Marlins.

Tomorrow’s Probables:

NYM Johan Santana (3-2) 4.54 ERA vs. FLA Josh Johnson (3-1) 3.35 ERA
