Match-Up: New York Yankees (Mitre) at Detroit Tigers (Willis)

The Yankees and Tigers will kick off the first game of their four-game set on Monday night. The Yankees come into this game winning eight of their last nine games, including taking two of three against the Red Sox. The Tigers have lost four of their last five games.

The Yankees went 5-1 against the Tigers last year, including taking two of three games at Commerica Park. Tigers outfielder, Austin Jackson is leading baseball with 45 hits, but has struck out 35 times.

Even though the Yankees are dealing with a bunch of injuries, they continue to just win. Their 21-9 record is second best in baseball, even after playing only 12 games at home this year.

Yankees starter, Sergio Mitre has never faced the Detroit Tigers. However, Dontrelle Willis and the Yankees have tangled in the past. Willis is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in a start against the Yankees. On the season, Willis is 1-1 with 3.99 ERA. Willis gave up three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings in his last start against Minnesota. Willis has walked 15 base runners in only 29 innings, something that Yankee hitters can look to exploit in this match-up.

I’m picking the Yankees. They are playing better ball right now and should wait out the D-Train. Opposing starters are rarely making it out of the fifth inning against the Yankees. Expect that trend to hold true on Monday night.

The Pick: New York Yankees

May Record: 4-5
