A rain delay pushed this game over the five hour Mark, but Teixeira powered the Yankees, clubbing three home runs in a 14-3 victory. However, the injury Gods claimed another victim today….

Initial Reaction:

It’d be dumb for anyone to write off the Red Sox (15-15), but the Yankees (21-8) are once again proving to be the superior team. They’ve taken four out of five meetings so far and the Red Sox currently sit in 4th place. David Ortiz isn’t even playing, Boston catchers cannot throw out base runners, and Josh Beckett is carrying a 7.46 ERA through six starts. I don’t think it’s panic time yet for the Dropkick Murphy’s faithful, but I’d definitely be concerned. They NEED a big bat…

On the injury front, Alfredo Aceves left the game with a stiff lower back, but picked up the win. He is expected to be out only a few days. Good news.

Positives From The Game:

X MARKS the spot: Mark Teixeira came into this game with two total home runs on the season. He left the game with five total. Teixeira hit home runs in the 5th, 7th, and 9th innings, collecting five total RBIs.

Cisco The Kid: With Jorge Posada nursing a sore calf, catcher Francisco Cervelli has been filling in admirably. Cervelli went 3 for 4 total and drove in five runs. He reached base in four of his five plate appearances. In 13 games this season, Cervelli is 18 for 42 (.429). Jorge should take his time and come back only when his calf is 100%. With AJ Burnett on the mound tomorrow, expect Francisco to be in there again.

Negatives From The Game:

Mother Nature: CC Sabathia started the game and lasted 4 2/3 innings before the rain showed up. Sabathia had a 2-2 count on Red Sox catcher, Victor Martinez before the umpires called for the grounds crew to roll the tarp onto the field. Sabathia only needed one more out in order to be eligible for the victory. Tough luck for Sabathia who battled today (4 2/3 innings, four hits, three runs, four strike outs). Sabathia also hit Dustin Pedroia in the butt with a fastball. The big man was obviously still mad from yesterday.

Aceves’ injury: See above, however, it shouldn’t be too bad.
