The New York Mets topped the Cincinnati Reds in a 5-4 win on Tuesday night. John Maine continued his improvement on the mound, throwing six innings giving up only one earned run and striking out six, showing that he deserves to stay in the Mets rotation. Rod Barajas had the game winning homerun in the top of the ninth inning.

Initial Reaction:

John Maine battled veteran Bronson Arroyo in the middle game of the three-game set. An overall solid performance on the mound for John Maine. Besides giving up the solo homerun to Brandon Phillips in the 1st inning, he otherwise looked comfortable on the mound, lasting through six innings with a decent pitch count.

The Mets offense was more consistent tonight and came through in the clutch.

Positives From The Game:

Power: Being away from CitiField has sparked the Mets power. Rod Barajas hit his seventh homerun of the season, which carried the Mets to a much needed win. David Wright hit his sixth homerun to tie the game in the 4th inning.

K-Rod: Frankie Rodriguez pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning for only his fourth save of the season, but he hasn’t allowed a run since April 17th. He closed out a very important 1-run game to avoid a fourth straight loss.

Negatives From The Game:

Nieve: He gave up back to back homeruns in the 8th inning, blowing the lead for the Mets. But he’s been effective all season, and he’s appeared in 17 games, so it’s probably time to give him a night off. No need to worry.

Interesting Facts:

  • Wright has hit 5 of his 6 homeruns away from CitiField this season.
  • The Mets had three relievers in today’s game with a sub 1.50 ERA: Mejia, Feliciano, and Rodriguez.
  • Jason Bay was the only position player to not get a hit in the starting lineup Tuesday night.

What’s Next?: The Mets look to win the series against the Reds on Wednesday afternoon.¬†Game time 12:35.
