In a muggy afternoon game, the bats were alive for the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers beat down the Chicago White Sox 12-3. Phil Hughes was also very impressive, pitching seven shut out innings. The win moves the Yankees to 16-8 on the season.

Initial Reaction:

It was a tale of two pitchers from the last time we saw Phil Hughes. Last time we saw him throw, he was wildly inconsistent with locating his pitches. Not today. He pitched seven shutout innings while only allowing four hits and one walk. He also struck out six White Sox.
The Yankees were also straight up offensive to Mark Buehrle this afternoon. His defense behind him didn’t help him, but the bats were still alive. Leading the way for the Bombers were Brett Gardner, Robinson Cano, and Nick Swisher, all of whom hit bombs to right field.

Positives From The Game:

See ya!: Brett Gardner’s name was littered across the box score again. I’m as nervous as the next guy about Curtis Granderson being out for a month, but seeing Brett turn on a hanging Mark Buehrle pitch in the fourth inning was impressive.

Cano: Honestly, what do ya know? Robby Cano went 2 for 4 with a walk, double, home run, and three RBIs.

C-Team Lineup: Fans showing up in the 85 degree heat and 60% humidity may have been disappointed to see a lineup that didn’t feature Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira as the DH. All that lineup did today was get ten hits and five runs off of the White Sox ace, Mark Buehrle.

Negatives From The Game:

Sure, Paul Konerko hit a bomb off of Mark Melancon in the ninth inning which ruined the shutout. But if you’re a Yankees fan and you have any issues with what you saw today, you need a weekend on a beach with a cold beverage.

Interesting Facts:

.666: Mark Teixeira’s batting average so far in the month of May. Sure, it’s two games, but it’s nice to see Big Mark turning it around.

Player of the Month: Today, Robinson Cano was named April’s MLB Player of the Month. Can’t think of anyone else that even belongs in the conversation for April.

What’s Next?:

The Baltimore Orioles will travel to the Bronx for a three game set with the Yankees. Game time is 7:05.

Projected Starters:

CC Sabathia (3-1, 3.12 ERA) vs. Jeremy Guthrie (0-3, 4.70 ERA)
