Ladies and Gentleman, Your 2013 New York Yankees

We all know how different the 2007 New York Yankees are from this year’s team, so I thought it would be interesting to take a look at what the 2013 squad could look like….

The team I came up with is based on only the players the Yankees have on their roster or in their farm system. I also factored in the players like Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte, who will likely retire, and players like Derek Jeter, who will re-up their current contracts. I would have added Javier Vazquez to the list of players the Yankees will resign, but I can’t see the Bombers giving him any sort of long term deal.

Now, this again is a team based only on players the Yankees have on their roster as of today. I do believe the Yankees will be huge players in the Carl Crawford and Cliff Lee sweepstakes and will also scour the trade market, but, as the team stands today, here is who I believe will headline the 2013 Yankees:

McAllister has a long way to go. Even though he’s 22, he’s performed well at every level. He’s currently in Triple A and has gotten off to a rough start(0-1, 4.50) through four starts. He’s not going to blow anyone away with his 90 MPH fastball, but he has a great slider. He’s definitely worth monitoring this season.

I think Romine over Montero is extremely interesting. I’ve heard scouts say that Romine is definitely better defensively, but I can’t see the Yankees having 24 year-old DH. I’ve never seen their catcher’s ERA or heard how they work with the staff. The Yankees have sacrificed defense in favor of offense with Jorge Posada. They may opt for to do the same thing if Montero proves to be a superior offensive player.

Yankee fans have been spoiled for the last 14 years with Jorge Posada. A lot of people will truly miss him when he retires.

Also, with all of the Yankees’ top prospects on this team, I assume you think that there won’t be much trading? I know it’s almost impossible to predict trades, but some of these players will be moved prior to 2013.

Derek Jeter will be 39 years old in 2013. It’s hard to imagine he’ll still be playing at the level he is now. DH is probably more of a probability for him.

AJ Burnett will also be 36. I can’t think of one 36 year old #2 SP in baseball off the top of my head, and its not as if Burnett hasn’t had his share of injuries.

While this is fun to think about, its like doing a mock draft for an NFL draft that’s happening in 3 years. Not very accurate

Do I believe this will be the team in 2013? No. I think the Yankees will be huge players in the trade market and I expect Cliff Lee to be here if he has a good season. Maybe Carl Crawford as well. This is just something to think about in the future.

As for Montero at DH, I put him there because he is the weaker defensive catcher of the two. He reminds scouts alot of Miguel Cabrera and I guess the question I ask back is if Cabrera were on this team where would he play? Montero is not fast enough to be a corner outfielder, so it leaves him only as a part time catcher/designated hitter.

If he develops into a solid all around catcher, Austin Romine will likely be dealt. This is a prediction of how the team could look if there are no moves made, but moves will definately be made.

I think Montero will be given the first opportunity to catch after Jorge retires. He is the team’s best prospect and Francisco Cervelli is not an every-day major league catcher. Montero did not have a great April in Triple A (2 HRs in 69 at-bats). However, he is worth monitoring over the course of the season and especially in August right before September call-ups.
