John Maine left with an injury to his non-throwing elbow, but Hisanori Takahashi came on to go three innings of two-hit baseball, allowing only one run. He picked up his first victory of his major league career. Ike Davis also added his first Major League home run, a 450-foot bomb.

Initial Reaction: After John Maine left the game in the 4th inning, Takahashi filled in admirably as he collected his first major league win (along with first career hit). Ike Davis also hit his 1st major league home run while Jose Reyes hit 3rd in the batting order for the first time. This collection of firsts led to the Mets win for the 4th time in five games, as they are halfway finished with their 10-game home stand.

The Positives:

Jose Reyes: His first game hitting in the 3-hole. He was 2-4, with a double and triple raising his average to .246. Look for Jose to continue batting 3rd, while Pagan will hit lead-off.

Jason Bay: Bay was 1-3 with an RBI triple and walk. More importantly, he didn’t strike out tonight. While he’s been slow to start to this season, Bay is too good for that to last. Tonight could be the start of Jason Bay’s season.

Ike Davis: Davis hit an absolute shot tonight for his 1st major league home run. He finished the night 1-3 with a walk. He’s hitting .389 in his 1st week in the big leagues.

The Negatives:

Rod Barajas: While he definitely possesses home run power, it’s either all or nothing with him. He was 0-4 tonight and is batting only .196 this season. The production out of the catcher position needs to improve.

Frank Catalanotto: This is absolutely nitpicking, but as the primary pinch hitter for the Mets, he needs to start actually getting hits. He’s 2 for 14 (.143) this season, but hopefully with more at bats, things turn around.

Interesting Facts:

450: How far Ike Davis’ home run traveled in the 5th inning.

0: The number of Home Runs Jason Bay has hit this season. He’ll hit his first tomorrow afternoon.
