In a game where good starting pitching was a necessity, John Maine went only five innings, throwing 115 pitches, giving up three runs on six hits.

Initial Reaction: Adam Wainwright pitched a complete game picking up the win for the Cardinals in a Cy Young like performance tonight. The Mets were unable to get anything going offensively after the 2nd inning. John Maine continues to struggle and New York failed to win a series. They now sit at 4-8 on the young season.

The Positives:

Angel Pagan: He had two of the four hits allowed by Wainwright tonight, and drove in two RBIs as well. He’s now hitting .303 on the season.

The Negatives:

1-2-3-4 These hitters combined to go 1-14 tonight. It’s tough to win games when the top of your lineup doesn’t get on base.

John Maine: Only going 5 innings when the team needed him to step up was not what Jerry Manuel and the Mets were looking for tonight. He pitched in and out of trouble for 5 innings, until Colby Rasmus hit a 3-run home run.

What’s next? The Mets head home for the next ten games, starting a four game series with Chicago tomorrow¬† night. First basemen Ike Davis could be called up tomorrow and make his major league debut.

Tomorrow’s Probables:

NYM Jon Niese (0-1) 6.55 ERA vs. CHI Randy Wells (1-0) 2.92 ERA
