The Mets beat the Cardinals 2-1 in a 20-inning nail biter, lasting 6 hours and 54 minutes. Johan Santana and the bullpen pitched 18 scoreless innings before giving up a run. Angel Pagan broke up Jaime Garcia’s no-hit bid in 6th, and went 3-6, including scoring the game winning run. K-Rod blew the save, but Mike Pelfrey stepped up to get his first career save in K-Rod’s first win of the year.

Initial Reaction:

Who is Jaime Garcia, and is he available in my fantasy league? Seriously though, he had terrific command all evening, and the Mets offense went idle against him. Reyes, Wright, Bay, and Francoeur all couldn’t figure this guy out? That’s just pathetic…

Johan Santana was also dominant, striking out nine batters in seven innings. He threw a lot of pitches early on, but threw them for strikes, which was the source of his success.

Bullpen was tremendous tonight for both sides and showed a lot of fight. Only reason why we won tonight.

By the way, the Cards could have really used Rick Ankiel on their roster in a game like this.

Positives From The Game:

Johan Santana: Santana bounced back Saturday afternoon after his disappointing start against the Nationals. If this is the Johan we get to see the rest of the season, Mets fans will have something to look forward to.

Strategic Pitching: Made sure Albert Pujols didn’t hurt them. In the 8th inning, Ryoto Igarashi pitched around him, which led to a walk, but then the Mets got out of the inning unscathed. Nieve did the same in the 10th inning. Takahashi intentionally walked Pujols to load the bases in 14th, and struck out Hawksworth to end the inning.

Bullpen: Pitched seven scoreless innings, before K-Rod blew the save.

Showing Heart: Mets fought 20 innings against a 1st place Cardinal team and won. Good for them!

Negatives From The Game:

Offense: Reyes, Wright, Bay, and Francoeur combined to go 1-27 with 9 K’s.¬†Angel Pagan had the only hit against Jaime Garcia, and it didn’t come until the 6th inning. Only scored their runs off sacrifice flies.

K-Rod: Only disappointment out of the Mets bullpen tonight. Surprisingly, he gets credit for the win, a rule I still dislike.
