Match-Up: Colorado Rockies (5-4), Hammel at Atlanta Braves (5-4), Lowe

Curtis Compton

Both the Braves and Rockies have been somewhat unimpressive so far this season. The Rockies lost an ugly contest to the New York Mets yesterday, 5-0. After putting a combined 17 runs in their opening two wins against the Mets, the Rockies couldn’t muster one run yesterday. The Braves just took two out of three against the lowly Padres, but have given up 42 runs in their first nine games.

Braves starter Derek Lowe hasn’t been great so far this season (4.50 ERA), but was winning pitcher in both of his starts. Lowe yielded seven free passes to San Francisco hitters in last weekend’s 7-2 victory.

Lowe is 3-0 against the Rockies in his last four starts.

The Rockies will trot out starter, Jason Hammel who has struggled this season and against the Braves. Hammel carries a 5.14 ERA into this game. He has allowed eleven runs in nine innings against the Braves in his career.

The Braves are coming off a nice road series win against the Padres while the Rockies laid an egg against the Mets. The teams split the 2009 season series and the home/road games, so history can be pretty much tossed aside.

I’m picking the Braves. They are at home (2-1 this year) and have the better starting pitcher going.

The Pick: Atlanta Braves
