Boy, doesn’t it feel great to have baseball back? The Northeast had to endure one of the snowiest winters in recent memory. Having the Boys of Summer back makes fans completely forget about snow blowers and snow shovels.

So far, most teams have completed their first five games of the season. We’ve seen long home runs, impressive pitching performances, and whiny umpires. Amidst all the fanfare of the first week, which players have stood out so far? Who should fantasy key on?

Who’s Hot?

(All numbers through Saturday 4/10):

1. Vernon Wells, OF, Blue Jays: The much maligned Wells has had an amazing first week. He has hit four home runs and drove in seven runs. He is roughly 1/3 of the way to matching his 2009 total HR output(15). Most importantly, his wrist is finally healthy. Wells is still available in 17% of Yahoo! Fantasy Leagues.

2. Jon Rauch, RP, Twins: When Joe Nathan went down with a season-ending injury, Twins fans became extremely skeptical about their team’s chances this season. However, Rauch has step up and filled the Nathan void thus far. Rauch is 4 for 4 in save opportunities. He has struck out four hitters in four innings. Rauch is available in 29% of Yahoo! Leagues. Get him. Now!

3. Jorge De La Rosa, SP, Rockies: The 29 year-old De La Rosa may be one of baseball’s best kept secrets. Don’t expect that to be the case much loser. De La Rosa is currently slotted as the Rockies’ 4th starter and impressed many with his first start of the season. De La Rosa went seven innings and struck out nine while only allowing one hit. De La Rosa had an impressive 2009 campaign, striking out 193 hitters in 185 winnings while winning 16 games. His ERA was a little high last season(4.38), but he is a great source for strike outs. He will take the next step this season. Shockingly, he is still available in 17% of Yahoo! Leagues.

Do me a favor, Turn off Jersey Shore for one second and go on your Yahoo! waiver wire and grab De La Rosa. It’ll be worth pausing the fist pumping for two minutes.

Who’s Cold?

1. Javier Vazquez, SP, Yankees: Vazquez got tagged in his first start back with the Yankees. In 5 2/3 innings, he gave up eight earned runs and struck out five. I’m not worried about Javy long-term, but this is not a great start to the season.

2. Brian Roberts, 2B, Orioles: Roberts started 2010 by going 2 for 14. However, Roberts strained an abdominal muscle in Friday night’s tilt against the Blue Jays. Monitor his status going forward, but this is a disappointing way for a Top 75 player to start the season.

3. Frank Francisco, RP, Rangers: Francisco has blown two straight saves this season. His ERA is currently a cool 27.00. According to manager Ron Washington, he has lost his job. Young flame thrower, Neftali Feliz, will assume his role.  Don’t ever pay for saves, remember?

Here’s your ESPN spoof commercial of the week. It stars Prince Fielder and Ian Kinsler with a cameo from Adam Scott(again). Sigh.

Are you worried about Vazquez? Think Rauch will fill in admirably for Nathan? Let’s hear YOUR thoughts.
