The Yankees dropped their first game in St. Petersburg, losing 9-3 to the Rays. Javier Vazquez got the start for the Yankees and really struggled. He gave up eight earned runs over 5 1/3 innings. Vazquez served up long home runs to Carlos Pena and Willy Aybar.

Rays starting pitcher, David Price was absolutely electric. Price struck out seven hitters over 7 2/3 innings while only yielding six hits. Price looked almost un-hittable at times, featuring a 96+ MPH fastball.

Initial Reaction:

This was just an ugly game for the Yankees. Carl Crawford stole a base in the sixth inning without any acknowledgment from Sergio Mitre or Jorge Posada. Javier was terrible.

Positives From The Game:

With Nick Johnson on first base in the 4th inning, Alex Rodriguez hit an absolute bomb to center field resulting in a triple. Nick Johnson turned on the after burners to score from first base.

Johnson also grabbed his first two hits of the season.

Negatives From The Game:

Rays’ Running Game: The Rays successfully stole three bases tonight. Both Vazquez and Sergio Mitre were slow to the plate, allowing BJ Upton and Jason Bartlett to easily take 2nd base.

Javier Vazquez: This wasn’t the start Vazquez was hoping for. His sinker looked great in the first three innings, but began to flatten out in the 4th inning. Vazquez also lost his opening starts in 2008 and 2009. No need to panic.

Interesting Facts:

Every Tampa Bay batter recorded a hit.

Mark Teixeira is 0 for 15 so far.
He started 2009 going 5 for 28 and finished with 39 HRs. No one is panicking.

112: The number of pitches thrown by Rays starter, David Price. This was the second highest total that the 23-year-old has ever thrown in a start. It’s a little dumb for manager Joe Maddon to do this in Price’s first appearance of 2010. We’ll have to monitor his pitch counts as the season goes on.

What’s Next?: CC Sabathia will face off with Tampa Bay rookie, Wade Davis Saturday at 3:10PM. The game will be televised on Fox.
