As many people know and regularly complain about, baseball games take too long to complete. Add another person to this group of complainers. Umpire Joe West made some waves with his comments on Tuesday. West was the crew chief for the Yankees/Red Sox series. Games in this series typically take about four hours to play. However, this is not okay with West. He made some very controversial statements to NorthJersey.com about the series…

“They’re(Red Sox and Yankees) two of the best teams in baseball. Why are they playing the slowest? … It’s pathetic and embarrassing. They take too long to play.”

Really, Joe? This is your job. After reading this statement, fans have to question his impartiality behind the plate. Will he favor one team over the Red Sox in his next series with them? What about favoring the Yankees foe, just to speed up games? Will balls be called strikes now with West behind the plate? This is definitely an issue for Commissioner Bud Selig to address.

However, there was one Yankee who did not take West’s comments lightly.

Mild mannered, Mariano Rivera snapped when he heard West’s comments. Rivera had this to add:

“He has a job to do. He should do his job,” Rivera said. “We don’t want to play four-hour games but that’s what it takes. We respect and love the fans and do what we have to do and that’s play our game.”

Thank you, Mo. As a Yankee fan, I love the Yankees/Red Sox games. I don’t care how long they last and I know that a lot of fans don’t either. It’s the best rivalry in sports. If West gets too tired or overworked, he should just quit. He has before. I don’t even feel comfortable having him umpire future Yankee games.

Some have supported West’s argument. Rob Neyer said that baseball needs to sped up. The average game last season took 2:52 to complete. The average Yankee game took 3:08; Red Sox, 3:04.

To the average non-baseball fan, the games will get boring and drag on. However, the die-hards love every minute of action. Early next week, I’ll propose some ways that baseball could attempt to speed up the games to satisfy all parties.

Do you think West is justified in his comments? What should baseball do to fix the time length?

West is a disgrace to baseball. These comments are out of line and the players deserve better than this.
