Free agent defensive end, Jason Taylor met with the Jets on both Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Long regarded as one of the most feared and hated Miami Dolphins, some may wonder how Jet fans would accept Taylor. If he can provide the Jets with another dynamic rusher, fans will forget about his time in Miami. Taylor has recorded 127.5 sacks over the course his 13-year career. However, he has only registered 10.5 sacks over his last two seasons. With the NFL seemingly transforming into a young man’s league, some may wonder how effective the 35-year-old Taylor would be.

The Jets feature a dynamic, aggressive defense under second year head coach, Rex Ryan. Led by linebacker Bart Scott and corner Darrelle Revis, the Jets were the league’s #1 ranked defense last season. They have already bolstered their secondary, regarded as their weak spot, by adding corner Antonio Cromartie from San Diego. Adding another big name like Taylor could push this unit over the edge.

I think neglected defensive end, Vernon Gholston would stand to benefit the most from a Taylor signing. Gholston has been extremely pitiful(0 sacks) in two seasons with the Jets. Gholston was the sixth player selected in the 2008 NFL draft. Learning from Taylor could transform this disappointing player.

The Jets are definitely in ‘win now’ mode. LaDainian Tomlinson has little left in the tank. Taking on Cromartie’s contract is a bit of gamble. Taylor’s deal would be low risk for the team, with decent potential return. If the Jets can sign him for $2-$4 million, it’d be worth it in an uncapped, win-now year.

Taylor and his wife are expected to discuss the Jets possibility over the weekend and come to a decision early next week.

Do Jet fans like the possibility of bringing in Jason Taylor?
