Both Joba Chamberlain and AJ Burnett threw extremely well in today’s 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Burnett started the game and threw 6 2/3 innings of three-hit ball. He allowed one-run and struck out two. Joba Chamberlain closed the game. He gave up two hits, but his velocity was around 93-94 MPH.

Game Notes:

Both Curtis Granderson and Jorge Posada went 2 for 4.

Designated hitter, Marcus Thames homered off Tiger pitcher, Nate Robertson.Thames has struggled this Spring Training(4 hits in 35 at-bats, including 14 strikeouts). It was nice to see Thames finally show some life.

Tigers Outfielder, Johnny Damon went 1 for 2 and scored the Tigers only run.

Thames could be an integral part of the team this season.Outfielder Jamie Hoffman was returned earlier this week to the Los Angeles Dodgers, ultimately locking up a roster spot for Thames. Thames isn’t going to dazzle anyone with the glove(-12.2 UZR), but he hammers lefty pitching(.256 BA, .516 Slugging). Expect Thames to come off the bench in the late innings for key at-bats. With Curtis Granderson(.210 BA vs. Lefties) and Brett Gardner(0 HRs vs. Lefties), Thames can give the Yankees a quick lift off the bench.
